The Treasures of Balchik Area

Рубрика: Tourism Източник:

Forty km north of Varna, Balchik is the best starting point to visit some of the most amazing places on Bulgaria’s northern Black Sea coast. A visit to Cape Kaliakra is a must. The cape stretches 2km deep into the sea and consists of 60-70m-high limestone rocks.

The mussel farm there – Dalboka – and the restaurant area a must for any trip. The place enjoys great popularity and without a reservation it is very unlikely that you will get a table. The phone number is 0887 953232. The road is really steep, so you might want to leave your vehicle at the parking area on the plateau and take the 10-minute walk down. A little bit further north is the magnificent Kamen Bryag (Rocky Beach) and its Yaylata cave area. It represents an oval ledge, broken off by the coast. The big cliffs make it almost inaccessible, except via a few narrow paths among the rocks. Close to 40 caves can be found in the vertical cliffs overhanging the sea with sheer walls and niches digging deep into the rock. Every August, a rock climbing championship is held there. The area is perfect for divers as well. Last but not least is Durankoulak Lake, 56km from Balchik and only 20km from the border with Romania.

It is one of the best-preserved coastal wetlands in Bulgaria, unspoilt by construction and not to be missed
