The Kartala ski resort will target not only locals but also tourists from the European Union and neighbouring countries Greece and Macedonia, Blagoevgrad deputy mayor Georgi Milev said. Giving Eastern Europe a chance
Category: Region infoThe region is largely undiscovered by Americans, though there's much to explore. But Asians and Western Europeans are visiting. When I was a little girl, I used to lie in bed at night, eyes closed, trying to imagine how the room would look if my feet were where my head was. My recent travels in Eastern Europe have been a little like that for me, an exercise in intentional self-disorientation that has allowed me to see things from fresh angles.Last spring, I started work on a series of articles about Eastern European destinations: Serbia; the old spa towns of Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) and Marienbad (Marianske Lazne) in the Czech Republic; the Danube River delta in Romania; and Budapest, Hungary, for its Art Nouveau. On each trip, I made some discoveries.

The two countries, which will add 30 million people to the EU's total population, received grim warnings that they risk losing out on some of the vast economic benefits of joining the EU should they stray from several conditions.EU officials have ordered the governments in Bucharest and Sofia to curb organized crime and corruption, clean up their justice systems, and ensure food safety. Still, the two nations' entry is being hailed as a landmark decision.
